Do you support dictatorships? Probably not, but your holiday might. Together with Civil Rights Defenders, we created Diktaturkompensera (Oppression Offset), turning an overlooked consequence of tourism into a national conversation.
Problem
People tend to care about human rights, but rarely think about them when choosing where to holiday. 40% of Swedes actually travel to autocratic countries, spending $164 million annually in countries whose regimes they don’t want to support.
Solution
Our solution was Diktaturkompensera (Oppression Offset): a tool that showed tourists how much their holiday contributed to an autocratic regime, using the same logic as carbon offsetting. It made their contribution feel personal and gave them the option to donate the same amount to Civil Rights Defenders.
Impact
The campaign became Civil Rights Defenders’ most shared campaign ever. It put tourism’s financial contribution to autocratic regimes on the agenda and sparked discussion about the issue.
